Location: Snazzy waterfront restaurant in Old Town, Alexandria
Occasion: A festive office gathering, shamelessly called the Christmas Party by everyone but me. I refer to it as the Holiday Party because I strive to exude political correctness in the office environment. Someday I may work somewhere it matters.
Attendees: The three owners of the company, a recently retired ex-owner, and three employees. Two female, five male. Age range mid-thirties to early sixties, three of us in our forties.
The conversation turned to massages. It wafted down and came to rest near my plate, which, until that point, had captured my attention ever since the discreet and ever-so-proper server seamlessly slipped it in front of me while refilling my wine glass with a very nice pinot. Pan-seared scallops in a light ginger sauce artistically surrounded an interesting layered mound of white rice, bok choy and spinach. I was a bit distracted, obviously.
I looked up when I heard my name. "Suzanne," a co-worker queried, "Have you ever had a professional massage?"
"Sure," I replied. "You?"
To my amazement, none of my other dinner companions has ever known the sheer pleasure, the delightful indulgence, of a professional massage.
Frankly I was a bit surprised. It left me wondering. So I ask you, gentle readers of the blogosphere, have you ever had a professional massage? If no, why not?

I've been lurking for a while so i thought i should say something.
Never had a professional massage. Can't afford one really, as other priorities come before it for moolah. I dream of finally getting to go to Bali one day and enjoy just such a luxury in a 5 start resort, with cocktail by my side. Until then, i'll just have to rely on what i can scam!
i meant to say 5 STAR resort, that is... not 5 start.. haha
Professional massages are my #1 indulgence. I try to schedule one every month and, in fact, I just had one on Thursday.
I go for deep tissue massages, so they're not exactly relaxing sometimes, but they're very therapeutic.
I once indulged in a one-hour full-body deep-tissue massage. It's not for me. I liked parts of it... like the warm towel treatment and when she did my feet. But the rest was not relaxing and it was downright uncomfortable at times. My wife Courtney LOVES them. She'd go for one every week if we could afford it.
I get a massage as often as possible. Considering I'm training to be a professional massage therapist, it's not often enough.
Most of the time when someone hasn't had a professional massage the reasons run along the same lines as C's or, here in the south, we get a lot of resistance because of the modesty factor.
Trop - You should try again. Deep tissue isn't for everyone as you said, but you would probably enjoy a nice full-body Swedish massage. BTW, I'm surprised a massage therapist would give you a deep tissue the first time out. That's not proper protocol.
hmm, lets just say I have never 'paid' for a professional massage.
Oh, yes, I get a pro massage whenever I can indulge (not too often). Why? Because I get very bad stress headaches, and sometimes a good massage helps more than any pill made. :-) I wish I could call it a medical expense....

a massage is good for your body, you mind and your soul... everyone should get one at least once... it is an investment in your health and wellbeing... alot of workplace health plans cover a portion or all of the cost too!
I have, but I actually didn't like it. I found that I'm very uncomfortable having anyone other than Fran touch me. She, on the other hand, loved hers.
Not often, but yes. And they are the most indulgent, wonderful things.
The closest thing I've experienced was a chair massage. I didn't feel all that different afterwards, and the masseuse said, "You're a pretty relaxed kind of guy, aren't you?" That's me. I didn't even need a massage--I just don't get that tense.
Yes, I actually used massage as a form of touch therapy. It helped me over come many issues due to past situations in life.
I used to have to pay for them. Now as long as I'm a good girl I get them for free. :-)
Yes, I've had quite a few professional massages. I get a monthly chair massage at my workplace (not paid for by my work, unfortunately), which I love. I've also had full-body massages, some at a massage training school and some via my insurance for medical reasons. For anyone in the vicinity of a massage school, give it a try; it's very reasonably priced and they're usually quite good. Or check with your local YMCA/YWCA, they often have good rates even for non-members. I love getting massages and wish I could get them more often. I got my mom a massage for a present once, but she didn't like it- I think she was too self-conscious to relax.
I just got totally beat up at my last professional massage. A little overly tense, apparently.
However, you mentioning Old Town A. reminded me...when I was young, my family lived in an upstairs apartment at a rowhouse about two minutes walk from there when it wasn't trendy and hot. I hear those rowhouses, now that all the old tenants are dead or gone, cost a bloody fortune. Ah, if only I'd had real estate money at age 2.
Oh yes, that is where I came to meet "body memory". A rather unpleasant reaction to such a sheer pleasure. One day when I get emotionally aquainted with myself, I will go back.
It is a magical thing.
Oh my yes. Professional massages are amazing.
Pedicures come in a close second.
Professional? No, but I have been rubbed.
I agree with Tiff...and you can add facials to that to.
yes, but only twice. they are too pricey. plus I prefer my wifey to do it
One professional rub that I paid for and hated even though I stressed to the woman(an acquaintance from yoga) what a wuss I am. My wussiness extends to getting my hair done and hating the shampooing.
Pedicure? Like clockwork every three weeks.
I once dated a massage therapist... she used to do amazing things for me.
LOL Actually, no, but I consider my partner of 28yrs a pro at all she does to me. Sooo..ok, yes.
I was lucky enough to be a massage student guinea pig...
It was paradise...
