Fires are one of our wintertime indulgences and amusements, also practical and comforting. If the winter is as cold as predicted, we'll burn that whole stack before spring.
You use all that just in your fireplace? We've more or less held off on the fireplace other than a couple of logs here and there since we heard that it actually means you lose heat and end up using more oil. We're so clueless about this stuff, is that not true? It was so much easier in TX not having to figure this shit out!
Sassy - you can get glass doors for your fireplace that will make it effecient. some even have small fans that blow the warm air out into the room. if you burn long, hot fires the thermal warming of the stone/brick also adds to the heat in the house.

Critters, John? Mice! They build comfy nests all throughout the woodpile. I always feel guilty when we displace them as the pile diminishes with use.
Wendy would just as soon they lived elsewhere. :) I don't mind 'em so much.

Hey, that looks like my back yard! Where I live, folks routinely go through 3-4 cords of wood in a winter.
