Suburban Crime

I mentioned in a recent post the vandalism that occurred in our neighborhood: 15 cars having their windows shot out with a beebee gun. A recent email from our Neighorhood Watch brought more information.
"Fairfax County Crime Solvers is asking for the public’s assistance identifying the person(s) responsible for vandalizing more than 80 vehicles with BB guns this month. The majority of these vandalisms occurred during the overnight hours of Saturday, March 25 and Sunday, March 26. The windows of the vehicles were shot out, causing more than $60,000 in damages."
The email went on to list the 44 residential streets across two police districts that were affected.

I feel rather silly admitting this, but for a brief moment I felt better to hear it was not just our neighborhood. Until I started considering how much more disconcerting it is to have such widespread vandalism occur. There is speculation it was a gang initiation. That's a happy thought, isn't it? It would be better if it had been a more isolated incident, even if it was in our neighborhood, just teenagers being stupid or something comparatively simple.

Eh, I don't know what to think. Except it sucks for people to show such casual disregard and disrespect for the others who share their world. What's up with that?

That's very disheartening. Sad, too.

We have a lot of crime in our city. I find it very discouraging. Crime and litter. An otherwise beautiful and culturally rich city is dragged down by these things.

I seriously doubt this was a gang initiation or even a gang crime Suzanne. Sounds more like bored suburban teens, 14-18 years of age. Most likely these are kids from the very same neighborhoods that were vandalized.

Statistics show they will probably be caught and in addition to the criminal charges, they (and their parents) will be held financially responsible. Hopefully they will be identified and arrested before they can do any more damage!

Thanks for the perspective, ex-cop. I hope you're right. :)

As much as I try to defend the opposing stance, sometimes people just suck.

And that sucks, in and of itself.

Some kids are just punks that are misunderstood but deep down inside just want to be loved!
