What Happened to December?

Serious question: If someone sends you a Christmas present in the mail, do you unwrap it upon receipt or do you put it under your tree and open it on Christmas Day?

I bombed out in fantasy football this year. Kudos to Chapin, who won the Blogger Fantasy League by taking down weese's adorable MAW in a rollover brutal finale. Add a rousing hand of applause for our amazing Commissioner, sporks. Girl, you rock. I'm already looking forward to next season.

My office relocated last week. In our previous building, we were on the first floor. We are now ensconced on the seventh floor of a building ten blocks north and three blocks east. We have a panoramic view of Old Town Alexandria and the Potomac River.

There are 120 stairs from the lobby to the seventh floor. The stairwells are clean, bright and well-marked. Going up, I am slightly winded by the fifth floor, the eighty-eighth step if one happens to count. Pathetic? Maybe. I prefer to think of it as having room for improvement.

There are elevators, of course. But I'd rather walk. Because I can. It's good for me. Obviously I need it.

Christmas offered a nice dose of family bonding, and oh my, what a diverse family we have. Soldier Boy dressed up for the occasion. This marked my fortieth or so Christmas in the DC area. None of them have been white. Weather wishes notwithstanding, the holiday was nice. What comes next will be nice too. My slippers are, of course, joining us for the next leg of our traditional year end festivities.

2008.
Ready or not.
Here we come!

how do you know it's a christmas gift? I mean, you don't REALLY know, right (that's how I rationalize it anyway)...

If we know it's a Christmas gift then it goes under the tree until Christmas morning. Fran's brother sent us something from amazon.com, we weren't expecting it, and didn't now it was from him. I opened it. I'd rather wait and see things on Christmas morning.

Climbing stairs is very good. Climbing 7 flights? If I wore a hat I'd take it off to you!

White Christmas here in DC?

HA!

Ahem... the package... Well, I wouldn't open it until Christmas... but that's just me.

I like waiting to open shipped gifts, but it is helpful to know whether gifts in shipping boxes are wrapped inside or not, because otherwise the receiver is stuck with the choice of opening the box and risking spoiling her surprise or simply putting the intact and generally unattractive shipping box amid her other gifts. Admittedly, this isn't a problem akin to world hunger, but it is one that's easily solved by a quick e-mail from, say, Fran's brother to say, "Hey, you're getting something from me from Amazon, and I didn't choose the gift wrap option."

Hey, look, the slippers and I made the same post. Word to the slippers, y'all are awesome.

Open immediately, unless Teresa is around. Then, wait.

Rip it open as soon as you get it and rewrap it to hide the evidence!!!!!

I save it. I am the Grinch of family Christmases when it comes to opening gifts earlier than the intended day.

2008 - hush your mouth!

Then, have a happy one.

You'll get your hand slapped if it doesn't go under the tree. Good for you for climbing stairs. I can't do that anymore--recovering from the third instance of hemarthrosis in 2007, learning to walk normally again.

Let's all have a great New Year--be great in '08!

I hope 2008 is treating you well. Thanks for the shout-out about winning FF. I'm in good company now but you already knew that. :-)

Me. Here. Right now. said...

Happy New Year! I'd definitely leave it to open later. I have no curiosity about gifts under the tree either.

Hmmm...if the present is from a friend, I say open it. If it is from a close family member, I say wait. That is how I base things on gift-opening. LOL. Getting this comment from me after the fact, I know, but I've been so busy and not blogging! Back to it though now that we're in the new year and all. 2008...whatever will you bring?
